GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Florida couple went from being spectators to record-breakers at Cruisin' the Coast. Just before 11 a.m. Thursday, Stephen and Linda McNeely from Port Charlotte became the 7,294th cruisers to register their classic car, shattering the 2014 record. The McNeelys have been to the cost before, but are cruising for the first time in a 1966 Ford Thunderbird.

"They have been coming as spectators and this year they bought an old car so they could be a part of it, so it's pretty cool," said Chris Smilek, the Cruisin' the Coast accountant.

Cruisin' is well on its way to a new record, within an hour of the McNeelys signing-in at Cruise Central, the number of registered cars had jumped to 7,369.

"There's still a steady stream," said Smilek. "We're expecting 7,500 total."

Registration at Cruise Central, located at Centennial Plaza in Gulfport, runs through noon Saturday.
