GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A fan favorite of Cruisin' the Coast every year is the Flame Throwing Competition. More than a thousand spectators gathered in the parking lot of Island View Casino in Gulfport to see which car could create the largest flame.
Hubert Keller was one of six contestants. He traveled from Savannah, Georgia and decorated his flame throwing car with a Halloween theme.
"Once it gets started it just takes on its on theme and then you keep adding to it all the time," said Keller. "Every year you think of something else to put on it."
People from all over the country were watching the competition, including W.R. Haupt from Minnesota. Haput explained how a car creates flames.
"You put a spark plug in your tail pipe, that's your igniter, then you have a slow drip of gasoline that flows back into the pipe and your igniter ignites the gas and that's where you get your flame," said Haupt.
Bill Reed drew the largest cheers of the night and won the fan competition, making his trip from Indiana worth it.
"They cheer, I've never had a crowd this big up north," said Reed. "I come here and three or four other places and it's ideal."
The panel of judges voted Pete Lowe's car to have the best flame. It was Lowe's first time trying the flame throwing competition and he plans to come back next year from Louisiana.
"I heard about it six or eight months ago about this going on and I said I've got to try it," said Lowe. "I watched a few videos and saw some of the flames they were doing. I had something to do it with, I just need to get it rigged up and try it."
Cruisin' the Coast continues through Sunday, October 11th.
