GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

According to Gulfport police, a Biloxi mother is behind bars, charged with the attempted murder of her 3-year-old child.

Gulfport Police Department spokesman Sgt. Damon McDaniel said the child was stabbed in the abdomen late Monday night in Jones Park. McDaniel said the child’s father called out for help after the stabbing.

Police responded to the scene around 10:50 p.m. and transported the child to a local hospital for treatment. McDaniel said the child was eventually transferred to a hospital in Mobile, AL.

Police are still investigating what led to the stabbing.

The mother, identified as 26-year-old Nomatter Gava-Hudson, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. She is being held at the Harrison County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Capt. Jennifer Bosco, spokeswoman for Keesler Air Force Base, confirmed the child's father is stationed at the base and is serving with the 81st Training Wing. However, she could not confirm if the parents are married or live on base.
