JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

"It is the ultimate recycling project," said George Ramseur as he showed visitors the 17 acres of island that's been created next to Round Island in Jackson County.

The island was built with dredge spoils and is the start of a much larger project. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is planning to use dredge spoils from the upcoming widening of the Pascagoula ship channel to expand this man-made island to around 200 acres.

The island has already attracted thousands of birds, including brown pelicans and terns. Vegetation is already beginning to cover the ground.

Two CMR commissioners were among those who toured the island project Tuesday. Steve Phillips was there, too. Look for his story tonight on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
