LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - Soon, Cable One subscribers in South Mississippi will need a digital box to receive TV service from the cable provider.
Jim Duck, general manager for the Gulfport/Long Beach area, says the change is necessary to keep up with the demand for HD channels. Two free boxes will be provided to subscribers. There will be a $5 charge for each additional box.
Duck says the change will help the company's internet service.
"It does increase bandwidth for us to where we can roll out higher speed internet," said Duck. "It frees up bandwidth and it also enhances their viewing opportunities."
Mid-March of 2016 is the target date for all Cable One users to have digital boxes. Also, beginning the week of October 4, the company will start using a uniform channel lineup across the coast. WLOX ABC will be on Channel 13 and 1013, WLOX CBS on channel 10 and 1010, Bounce TV on channel 28 and 1028.
If you have TV service other than Cable One, you will not be affected.
Below is the press release provided by the company concerning the changes.
"Cable ONE announced today that it will begin making the transition from analog to All Digital Technology in Biloxi, Gulfport and Pascagoula beginning November 3, 2015.
"With the switch from analog to All Digital technology, Cable ONE will be able to add more HD channels, provide even better picture quality, and deliver faster internet speeds," said Cable ONE Division Marketing Director Nanci Doucet.
Following the transition to All Digital, Cable ONE will add a number of High Definition channels at the end of March 2016, including: AMC HD, Travel HD, BBC America HD, IFC HD, Hallmark Channel HD, Fox Business News HD, TCM HD, Sundance HD, The Weather Channel HD, Headline News HD and NBC Sports HD. In addition, more than 40 commercial-free music channels will be available to all Cable ONE residential customers.
Cable ONE customers will receive more information regarding the All Digital transition in the mail beginning in mid-October. All Digital devices can be ordered online and shipped directly to customers homes or can be picked up at the local Cable ONE office beginning November 3. Customers with a CableCARD, a TV connected through a CableCARD device, or a TV with a Motorola receiver or DVR will not need an All Digital Device.
