GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

It's a national initiative that is gaining popularity, including here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast: Coffee with a cop. Today, for the first time, it was held in Lucedale at McDonald's.

Several officers from the George County Sheriff’s Department and the Lucedale Police Department attended the event.

In the first hour alone, more than 30 people stopped by to say hello, shake hands and swap stories with the law enforcers. Lots of pictures were taken, and the officers were even presented a gift by one of those in attendance.

With law enforcement under the gun across the country, the citizens who came out today say it's important that officers are portrayed in a good light. The officers responded in kind, saying they appreciated the show of support and it was good for them to get to know members of the community they serve.

Ironically, right in the middle of coffee with a cop, a minor accident happened right outside of the McDonald's restaurant. Several officers sprang into action, directing traffic and making sure everyone was OK. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The event was organized and hosted by Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers. Doug Walker covered the event and will have more on the story later tonight on WLOX News and on WLOX.com.
