BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

For the first time, students at North Bay Elementary School in Biloxi have started their own book club. The club consists of 45 fourth and fifth grade students.

The ribbon was cut for the book club with the help of Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich. He talked to the kids about the importance of reading and explained to them how he got his nickname.

When he was young, Gilich’s brothers would read “Jack and the Beanstalk” to him, hence the name FoFo.

For this first meeting, the children read a book of poetry and then discussed what they had read. Even with most every child having a cell phone and video games, as well as being connected to the Internet, the children said they still enjoy picking up a book and reading.

Doug Walker covered the story and will have more later today on WLOX News and on WLOX.com.
