BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Richie Brown was a stellar linebacker and running back at Long Beach High School. WLOX selected Brown as Defensive Player of the Year after his senior season.
Brown signed a football scholarship with Mississippi State and received extensive playing time last season as a sophomore.
Now, during his junior season, Brown is making an impact on the Bulldogs defense. In Saturday's win over the Auburn Tigers, Richie made 13 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss and had two sacks.
Thanks to those statistics, Brown was named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
The win over the Tigers gave Mississippi State 3 wins and 1 loss on the season, 1 and 1 in SEC play.
Brown and his Mississippi State teammates travel to Texas A&M 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Following the win over Auburn, Mississippi State cracked the AP Top-25 poll, ranked at No. 21.
The 4-0 Aggies, 1 and 0 in the SEC, are ranked No. 14. Texas A&M is coming off a 28-21 overtime win against Arkansas.
