GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Nearly 1, 300 students in Gulfport are gearing up for National Fire Prevention week. City officials said the children are participating in a comprehensive fire safety class at Barksdale Pavilion in Jones Park in Gulfport. The Gulfport Fire Department planned the event, which is the first of its kind in many years in the city.
Firefighters rolled out several hands-on displays for the children, including fire boats, firetrucks, and safety trailers. It is all part of the message of the National Fire Prevention Week Campaign. The theme of the event is, "Hear the beep where you sleep. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm."
About 750 children in grades 3rd - 5th attended the class Monday, and many other students will be attending the session Tuesday.
