300 Girl Scouts gather for bonfire in Gulfport

About three hundred Girl Scouts came together in Gulfport Saturday to reunite all Scouts on the coast and to fight dropping membership numbers. The Long Beach/Pass Christian unit sponsored the gathering.

The event featured a bonfire, old-fashioned singing and, of course, smores. But the biggest attraction was simply friendship.

Organizers say Hurricane Katrina and council mergers in the last few years have kept numbers down. So they worked for about a month to pull the event together to give new energy to the organization.

"The numbers have dropped and we've had a lot of people leave," said Girl Scout Leader Jeanne Tagge. "Some people are coming back, but we want to show people that Girl Scouts are alive and well and we have a lot of fun in Girl Scouts."

Organizers estimated that in addition to the Girl Scouts, the event attracted about 200 leaders and parents.
