OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - As an Ocean Springs sexual assault victim continues to recover, a benefit is being held on Sunday to show support and raise awareness against violence.
The victim, who is also a single mother, was attacked in early September at the apartment complex where she works. Leading up to the fundraiser, the victim wrote a letter thanking the community for supporting her.
"I just want to say that I am so thankful for all the help from the community." said the victim. "It is amazing how our community comes together in times of need. I have so many people putting together fundraisers for me and my daughter and don't think I can ever show them how appreciative of them I am."
The Biloxi man accused in the assault, Cameron May, was arrested in Destin, and is awaiting to extradition back to Jackson County.
The Brave Benefit for the victim is being held on Sunday, September 27 from 1 - 6 p.m. at the Juke Joint in Ocean Springs, featuring music from Blackwater Brass and a silent auction.
Christina Lapasinski helped organize the event.
"Not only was it an attack on an individual but also on the entire community," said Lapasinski. "There has been an outpouring of support from the local community and our hopes are to raise awareness for all local residents."
Cost to attend is $10 at the door, children under 10 can get in for free. All proceeds will be directly donated to the victim to assist in her recovery.
