GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Legendary Gulfport High School basketball coach Bert Jenkins has died. He was 90 years old.
In the 28 years that Jenkins was the head coach at Gulfport High, his teams won seven state championships and 13 "Big Eight" titles. The Gulfport High gym is named after Jenkins.
Jenkins graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1947 with an English degree. He received his masters from the University of Alabama in 1949.
Jenkins was unable to play sports in college because of a wound suffered in World War II in the Battle of the Bulge. Jenkins was captured by German forces in 1945, and one of his legs had to be amputated as a result of his injuries.
Jenkins' Gulfport teams won 866 games and lost only 180. That's a winning percentage of 82.8.
Jenkins was named National High School Coach of the Year in 1965, 1970, 1976 and 1989. He was inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame in 1981.
