Fishing for a cause takes center stage this weekend during the inaugural Blake Terry Memorial Fishing Tournament at the Ocean Springs Marine Mart. The event will feature an inshore and offshore divisions with proceeds going to aid in search and rescue efforts and help local families that face difficult times after a tragedy in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Blake Terry was an Ocean Springs resident who lost his life while diving off the Louisiana Coast in 2011.
"Blake was diving 80-miles off the Louisiana Coast in Fouchon and we never recovered his body," said Tony Blake of his son. "We have set up a Blake Terry Foundation that raises money for search and rescue efforts and also provides family support for anyone who is lost in a diving accident. Like our family, we were left with the thought of - what do we do next - because the accident happened in International waters so Louisiana didn't issue a death certificate.
"Now, anytime that someone is lost, the Coast Guard can contact the foundation and we can help supply fuel and support to help with the rescue."
The Offshore Division features cobia and king mackerel with an entry fee of $70. First place will pay out $1,000 followed by $500 for second and $300 for third.
The Inshore Division entry fee is $45 per person and includes speckled trout, redfish, flounder and blackfish. First place pays out $800 for first, $400 for second and $200 for third.
A captains meeting is set for Thursday at 6 pm at the Ocean Springs Marine Mart. Weigh-ins will be from 3-7 pm on Friday and 3-6 pm on Saturday. For more information, call (228) 875-0072.
