BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Students in Cindy Grammar’s class at Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School quietly watched history unfolding Wednesday morning. The Catholic school children witnessed the moment as Pope Francis addressed a crowd at the White House in Washington.

The youngsters are encouraged by what they see and hear from the Holy Father. Sixth grader, Gracyn Yelverton, said, "It was very exciting. I could tell his speech was from the heart. And it’s a really good example for us young Christians."

Her classmates agreed with that assessment. Several mentioned the fact that Pope Francis has a Twitter account and they can follow him on social media. Others are more impressed with his modest lifestyle.

"He doesn’t live in a fancy house or drive a cool car," said one young student.

They’ve been learning more about the pope in advance of his visit to the United States. Their teacher says it’s a great opportunity to them to not only discuss and learn more about Pope Francis, but also to address many of the critical issues facing the world today, such as immigration and poverty.

"As Catholics, we have to look at the universal church as the thing that brings us together as one people, and addressing those issues as Christ would," said the teacher.
