D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - One thousand two hundred, that's how many employees D'Iberville's first casino resort is planning to hire. The Scarlet Pearl job fair is Wednesday. Tod Reilly is the Director of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's culinary program. Reilly said about two dozen of his students are getting ready for the Scarlet Pearl's big job fair.
"The local hospitality industry is the life blood of this program. We would not have grown to the point we are today with this beautiful facility and over 200 students in the program if it wasn't for the fact that they actually had opportunity once they left here," Reilly added.
South Mississippi's casino industry is the perfect market for the MGCCC culinary students to get their start. That's why new casinos like the Scarlet Pearl are such a big deal.
"I think it's very important to us, because not every day those positions come open, but they give us the opportunity to show everyone in the casino industry that Gulf Coast is a great school to start off with," said MGCCC student Willie Fairley.
MGCCC student Michael Turan is planning to go to the job fair, and he thinks he knows what they will be looking for.
"Being prepared, knowing what we're going to be facing and hoping that we're ready for it," said Turan.
Of course the mass hiring will be a major benefit to those in the gaming industry as well.
"We understand that they're not going to hire everybody. Everybody's not going to end up getting Scarlet Pearl, but what's going to happen is it's going to open up other spots," said John Montella who is the owner of Coast Gaming Academy.
Montella said he's been in the business for many years, and something about the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort has him fired up.
The job fair is tomorrow at the D'Iberville Civic Center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
