MDOT launches poster contest to encourage riding bikes

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation is encouraging kids to get outside and ride their bikes. A new campaign is promoting bicycle riding as a way to lead a healthy lifestyle.

As a part of the campaign, MDOT is holding a poster contest. Fifth grade students are asked to create a poster around the theme #longfortheride.

One winner will be selected to represent Mississippi and go on to a national competition. The national champion will win a trip to the 2016 National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C. Their school will receive a bicycle rack that provides space to park 20 bikes and a biking and walking tracking system called The Hub.

"This poster contest is a great way to encourage the state's youth to ride bicycles and engage in physical activities, particularly as an alternative means of transportation to and from school," said Commissioners Dick Hall, Tom King and Mike Tagert in a joint statement from the Mississippi Transportation Commission.

The deadline for the poster contest is Oct. 21. To learn more about the SCG Poster Contest or to participate, visit, call 601-359-7685 or email
