WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) -

Family and friends celebrated Amy Prentiss' life during a news conference at Blaylock Park in Wiggins Friday morning. Prentiss is the woman shot to death at her home in Gautier earlier this week. Prentiss' family described her as the apple of her father's eye, smart and one who put others before herself.

"We celebrate today a much loved mother, sister and granddaughter, who loved her family and was much loved and will be tremendously be missed by her family," said Amy Prentiss' daughter Abigail Osteen.

Abigail talked about the woman her mother was. Instead of reflecting on her mother's shooting death she said she wanted to celebrate her mother's life.

Behind Abigail at the press conference were Prentiss' parents holding back tears on a woman considered the apple of her father's eye.

"We celebrate a first born child who was tagged mater by her daddy as she become the apple of his eye at birth. We celebrate a one-year-old, who 40 years ago was nestled in the lap of Santa Claus, her granddad at a Hattiesburg store," said Abigail.

The 40-year-old was described as an overachiever, perfectionist who excelled in the classroom becoming valedictorian both in 6th grade and high school. Prentiss ended her flourishing career as a trauma nurse to take on a medical coding job so she could grow her daughter's music career. But her desire to help others went way beyond her family.

"We celebrate a caring outreach ministry team who drove the church bus to pick up kids, mentor youth, help them gain their GED, help them get started in life and opening her doors and started feeding them when that is what they needed," Abigail said.

Abigail also talked about her mother's forgiving heart and love for animals.

"We ask that all respect the very real need of all of our family as well as the Schmidt family and Lamb family for the time and space to grieve, to mourn and in time to go forward with life. We are sorry for their loss of future times with those who are now tragically gone as we are sorry for our own loss," she added.

Prentiss' body was found in her Gautier home September 14 with a gunshot wound. Authorities said the shooting suspect, Shannon Lamb killed himself following a police pursuit in north Mississippi.

Prentiss' funeral is scheduled for this Sunday in Wiggins.
