BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - There have been a few surprise football teams and others who haven't fared as well as what was expected before the season kicked off. Those teams have another week to fine tune their game plans before district play begins next Friday.
The Friday Night Football Showdown crew will follow six area games, East Central at St. Martin, D'Iberville travels to St. Stanislaus, Poplarville at Hancock, Long Beach entertains Moss Point and South Jones at West Harrison.
D'Iberville has posted 3 wins and 1 loss and is coming off an impressive 44-21 win over Oak Grove. Senior quarterback Jacquelle Green returned after sitting out the Pascagoula game two weeks ago and he helped lead coach Buddy Singleton's team under the win column. Without Green in the starting lineup, the Panthers rallied to beat the Warriors 28-14.
St. Stanislaus will have the home field advantage. That might be the only advantage the Rockachaws will have in facing a talented Warriors team. Head coach Bill Conides wanted his team to play high-caliber competition before entering district play and St. Stanislaus has been able to post a 1-3 record. The Rockachaws lost to Class 6A Gulfport, St. Paul's of Mobile and Brother Martin of New Orleans. After tonight's game with D'Iberville, the Rockachaws will not face that type of competition.
East Central travels to St. Martin. The undefeated Yellow Jackets have ripped off four straight wins and have some of the most explosive offensive players in the state. Quarterbacks Tyler Polk and Wayne Overman alternate during the game and when one is not playing behind center, he will still be involved in the offense as a running back or receiver. The Hornets defense has a difficult challenge on their hands, a challenge head coach Seth Smith welcomes. Coach Smith is a motivator and will have his team pumped up for St. Martin. Yellow Jackets head coach Eddie Wayne Whitehead always seems to be calm when he's on the sidelines and he's feeling more confident this season because St. Martin's defense has stepped up.
An interesting game will hit the playing field in Long Beach. That's where the Long Beach Bearcats and Moss Point Tigers clash. Long Beach coach Forrest Williams and his Bearcats posted their first win of the season last week, a 34-21 victory over Vancleave. The Moss Point Tigers under head coach Willie Brown crushed Greene County 41-14. Two weeks ago the Tigers defeated Harrison Central.
Poplarville is on the road at Hancock. The Hawks were undefeated up until last Friday when Hancock lost to De La Salle in New Orleans 45-0. The Hornets beat Stone 35-12.
The South Jones at West Harrison will be the final featured Friday Night Football Showdown game. The Hurricanes haven't had much success, since the starting quarterback left the school. Coach Sean Harden had to make adjustments and it's taking time.
