GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Coast Guard Station Gulfport is reaching out to college students with its new Coast Guard Auxiliary University program at University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park.

The program allows students to experience what it's like to be in the Coast Guard by letting them join the auxiliary. So far, just five students have enrolled, but the Coast Guard station is working to boost those numbers by hosting an open house Thursday.

Students can tour the base and take a ride aboard a 45 foot patrol boat. Members of the regular auxiliary will also be on hand to speak with the college recruits about the duties of the Coast Guard, such as search and rescue along with law enforcement.

Tune in tonight as WLOX News' Steve Phillips gives you an inside look at the program.
