WAVE sponsors candlelight vigil in response to recent assaults

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

In light of two recent assaults, one that resulted in death, Women Against Violence Everywhere is hosting a candlelight vigil Thursday night.

The ceremony was originally in response to a recent sexual assault of a woman at an apartment complex in Ocean Springs. Now, the murder of Amy Prentiss in her Gautier home this week has sparked more concern, and given the vigil an even more important purpose.

WAVE was founded in November of 2014 after a woman was assaulted on the Biloxi Bay Bridge.

The bridge walk the organization sponsored then, and again several months later, has brought a lot of attention to safety both to those who walk the bridge every day as well to police and city leaders.

As in the past, the event has gained traction through social media and a core group of members who make sure there is no let down in the effort to stop sexual abuse and domestic violence.

The vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. at Fort Maurepas in Ocean Springs on Thursday. Mike Lacy will be at the event and have more on WLOX News and WLOX.com.

    Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to arrive on the Coast tomorrow to examine wreckage from that Cessna 172 that crashed this morning just north of the Diamondhead Airport.
