The streets of Jackson County are a bit safer today, thanks to an overnight drug sweep. More than 20 people are behind bars now, charged with various drug offenses.
Officials with the South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team say this drug roundup was the culmination of a months-long investigation.
The people who were arrested today we're booked at the sheriff’s substation at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. They were then transferred to the Jackson County Jail.
Most will have initial appearances sometime Wednesday.
Sheriff Mike Ezell said this is a way to send a message to drug dealers that they are being watched. He also admits his frustration, knowing that most of those arrested today will be out on bond within 24 hours.
Doug Walker is covering the story and will have more later today on WLOX News and on WLOX.com.
