WASHINGTON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A former Health Information Clerk for the Washington County Health Department has been arrested for embezzlement.
According to a release from Mississippi State Auditor Stacey Pickering, 33-year-old Kenyatta Smith reportedly 'embezzled funds in the form of food products during the time period of December 2013 through January 2015.'
Evidence shows that Smith entered a made up child into the Women, Infants and Children system, which enabled her to receive food benefits 14 times in a two year period.
Smith was indicted on one count of embezzlement by a Washington County Grand Jury, and served a demand for $3,671.10.
"There are many families in Mississippi who depend on the WIC program. It is unfortunate that people abuse the system when there are so many in need," said State Auditor Stacey Pickering.
