STONE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Family, friends and fellow firefighters filled a small Baptist church in McHenry Friday morning to say goodbye to Frederick Lee "Fritz" Muffler.

The 73 year old died one week ago. He was remembered as a dedicated family man and community servant who was the backbone of the volunteer fire service in McHenry and neighboring Sunflower.

He was a storyteller with a gruff voice; always quick with a laugh or practical joke. Friends shed tears and shared laughs as Fritz was eulogized.

Along with his dedication to the fire service and his community, Fritz was also a dedicated employee of WLOX for 30 years. He applied his engineering talents while tending to the station's transmitter and tower in Stone County.

Fritz was buried in Sumrall Cemetery with military honors, since he was also a former member of the armed forces. Fellow firefighters carried his casket to his final resting place.
