Labor Day ranks among the top holiday weekends for tourism business.
On Monday, families from across the region flocked to South Mississippi for the final blast of summer fun. Several businesses have plans to add attractions to lure even more families to the coast and entice them to stay longer.
Chris Homan spent the holiday enjoying some tee time with his daughters.
"We're spending the day off having some fun playing mini golf. When you look at the developments going up around here, it's not just casinos. It's all kinds of stuff and really, it's for the whole family," said Homan.
About 2,000 visitors from Alabama, Louisiana, and across Mississippi helped drum up a lot of Labor Day business for the "Big Play Family Fun Center" in Biloxi.
"She loves it down here. If it were up to her, she'd live down here," said Angie Crawley of Columbia, MS.
The owner of the business says he recently added a water slide, miniature bowling lanes, and expanded the arcade. Up next: another project he hopes encourages more families to come and play on the coast.
"We have a big announcement in a couple of weeks, a major, major expansion and we're happy to do it. It's been a good business. The Biloxi market, the coast as a whole, has been so under-served in terms of family entertainment," said Brandon Wooldridge.
Expansion is also in the future for Gulf Islands Water Park in Gulfport. It's a project that will take families on a whole new adventure.
"We're actually adding an Adventure Park in 2016. That's an adventure in the trees where you'll be doing some zip lines in some places and some activities and games in other places, but you're always harnessed in. said General Manager Mark Moore. "You're out in nature and that's really the whole experience."
The experience could appeal to visitors like the Field family of New Orleans, who is always looking for more fun choices.
"Come down the coast, hit the casinos, eat, something different you know," said Melvin Fields of New Orleans.
While many businesses are reporting a strong end to the summer tourism season, they hope the new additions will help turn South Mississippi into a family destination year round.
Some attractions at the new "Adventure Park" could be ready to open by Thanksgiving. September 12 and 13 will be the last weekend of the 2015 season at Gulf Islands Water Park.
