GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Labor Day crowds are out and about all across coastal waterways on Monday.
At Jones Park in Gulfport, families with boats, coming and going; unloading at the launches. Anglers casting the day away under the Gulfport sun.
By many accounts, the holiday turned out to be as nice as it could be for locals and newcomers, alike.
"We moved to Mississippi not too long ago and just fell in love with Gulfport," said Christopher Pridgen.
Pridgen and his partner Lewis quickly made new friends; friends who happened to have a boat.
"They're going to take us out on their boat today and just have a good ol' time," said Pridgen.
According to Pridgen, the day will be sent relaxing on the water, and maybe even catching a few fish. However, he'll leave the fishing to Lewis.
"So, he does all the fishing, and he does all the cleaning, and I do all the eating," said Pridgen.
Many others are doing the same thing. For bait shop owners like Justin Roland, that means business. What may come as a surprise is that Roland says he doesn't usually see sales spike over the holiday weekend.
"Overall, I'd say it's pretty much normal with our weekend business," said Roland.
But, that doesn't mean the fishermen aren't out in full force.
"It's kind of hot right now, so we're not really catching a whole lot," said fisherman, James McNew, who says any holiday spent in the outdoors is a good one. "That's pretty much what I'm doing today, just getting out and about, instead of sitting at home," said McNew.
