GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - With all the things there are to do on the Coast for Labor Day, some families just wanted to take it easy and have some fun in the sun. Families flocked to a popular spot in Gulfport to fire up their grills and cool off in the water.

There's something to offer every visitor to Jones Park, but one very popular feature at the park is the splash pad. This Labor Day, children splashed and danced away in the water to keep cool under the sun.

"He just loves to come outside. I can't keep him in the house and he loves water, so we decided to come to Jones Park," Gulfport resident Amber Carroll said.

For the Carroll family, spending time together is all about creating memories.

"I just enjoy being with my family and having him come out here to have fun and enjoy the day," Chuck Carroll said.

Like the Carrolls, a family from New Orleans came to make their memories.

"We were tired of the lakes and the river view that's in New Orleans. They can get kind of boring, so there's more stuff to do out here," Kenna Brooks said.

They got an early start to their day of family and fun.

"6 a.m. this morning to set up out here," Brooks said.

"It's a really fun day. We got the barbecue and stuff, and it's all good," Tyrik Crawford said.

Brooks said because her family is so big, that's the way they like to party. Their Labor Day spread of food and fun was just that; big.

"I have red beans New Orleans fashion, blue runners, red beans right here, chicken and ribs. We have hamburgers that have to go on the grill, ribs. We're boiling crabs," one family member said.

Since it's the unofficial last day of summer, these family members are happy to spend their day off work together on the Gulf Coast.

"The good food, the kids running and enjoying themselves before they go back to school and just being out here," Brooks said.
