SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX)
In 1894, Congress officially created the Labor Day national holiday as a way to recognize the efforts of the American worker. It is always celebrated on the first Monday in September.
While many workers enjoy a day off, just as many spend the day laboring. Some of the people we ran into today doing their jobs included construction workers, a manager at a coffee shop, a retail worker, car mechanics, a fireman and a casino worker.
Most said today is just another day for them, and they don't mind being at work. Others said they're thankful for their jobs with the U.S. economy still struggling.
Doug Walker was also on the job today talking with these workers. Watch for his story tonight on WLOX News and on WLOX.com.
