Donations fund new cargo van for animal shelter

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Thanks to several years of generous donations, the Jackson County Animal Shelter was able to make a big purchase to further their mission — a new cargo van.

The $25,500 Ford Transit 250 was purchased solely with donations, and will be used to transport animals for adoption events. In January, the shelter began participating in off-site adoptions in an effort to place more animals in new homes. As a result, an average of nine to 10 animals are placed in foster homes or adopted at each event.

However, the shelter's van broke down in May, and they had to rely on volunteers to transport animals and supplies.

"We want people who have donated over the past several years to know that we appreciate them and that their contributions are benefiting the animals," says Shelter Director Joe Barlow. "Although I know our volunteers are always ready to step up and help whenever they are asked, the new van will alleviate a lot of the hassle and liability (or pressure) involved in coordinating multiple vehicle transports."

To view available adoptable animals at the Shelter, visit "Adoptable Animals of Gautier, Mississippi" on Facebook, www.petfinder.com or stop by the shelter, located at 4400 Audubon Lane in Gautier.
