Pass Christian plans 'Picnic in the Park' to honor residents and volunteers

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - While Pass Christian was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, today is a day of celebration with the Picnic in the Park honoring the 39571 community in War Memorial Park.

The celebration gets cranked up about 4 p.m. with a welcome by Pass Christian Mayor Chipper McDermott and the national anthem by Pass Christian High School.

Today is also a day to recognize residents and volunteers who helped Pass Christian recover. There are plenty of picnics going on with blankets, chairs and tables.

But there are also food and beverage vendors along with business and nonprofit organizations. Dr. Rock and the Interns will be playing through 8 p.m.

After the picnic will be the memorial ceremony on the beach at dusk where family members and volunteers will light and release floating lanterns in honor of the 29 residents who lost their lives in the storm.

After the lanterns are aloft, metal sculptures in the shape of an eye will be lit in sequence from the waterline to the highway, depicting the direction the storm came onto the Coast.
