Coach Cooper Farris is breathing a whole lot easier these days. It wasn't that long ago the Gulf Coast Bulldogs were taking their lumps... posting only 9 wins and 19 losses. Over the last 11 games 11 straight wins propelling the Bulldogs atop the South Division race with 14 wins and only 2 losses, 20 and 19 overall.
Farris said, "We played a really tough schedule early in the season. We saw a lot of 88 and 95 mile an hour fast balls. Guys were getting it up there pretty good. Most of the teams we had played had already played 10 to 12 games. They had time to weed out their mistakes and playing that schedule has helped us when we got into conference play."
Fred Lewis has been diligent at the plate... result.. he's batting .351. In Tuesday's 6-1 win over East Central in the opener of a double-header Lewis ripped a three run homer. Randy Redmond, D'Iberville's home run king leads the Bulldogs at the plate with a .449 batting average.. an on base percentage of .574 and a slugging percent of .645.
Redmond said, "I try to work as hard as I can everyday along with everybody else. We work probably harder than any other team in the country and I think that's what has turned us around in the middle part of the season."
Cooper Farris never gave up on his Bulldogs and his Bulldogs never called it quits.. that's because they're fighters coming off the ropes ready to KO their next opponent.
