JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - According to Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, the new Marine Education Center in Jackson County will be the finest marine research facility in the country.

Wednesday morning, Bryant joined other local, state, and University of Southern Mississippi dignitaries in a groundbreaking ceremony for the $16.2 million complex at Cedar Point.

The center will feature 12 structures for research, education and public use, and replaces the J.L. Scott Marine Center at Point Cadet, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

The project is expected to be complete by early 2017.
