GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Gulfport Admirals and St. Stanislaus Rochachaws clashed Friday night in game two of the Shrimp Bowl at Milner Stadium.
The highly talented Rochachaws, led by junior quarterback Myles Brennan, presented a tough challenge for the home standing Admirals.
Gulfport head coach Eddie Pierce called on 5-11, 205 pound running back Deon Cole and an inexperienced offensive line to keep the ball away from the Rockachaws high octane offense and the senior responded by piling up 156 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
He netted 7.4 yards a carry and played a major role in helping the Admirals sail past the Rockachaws 28-20. Deon Cole is the WLOX High School Football Player of the Week.
Cole said, "I just work hard. I know they're going to be targeting me. The quarterback and receivers, I have a lot of trust in them. If they can make plays too, that opens it up a little. If I get a chance I just go."
The win over St. Stanislaus has built momentum for Gulfport. Cole will once again play a key role in moving the chains for the Admirals.
Coach Pierce said, "We were a little concerned about our offensive line because we really only had one starter coming back. So, we were really happy the way they performed Friday night. I was proud of that effort. Of course, Deon is such a hard runner, he can make use look really good at times."
Cole and his Gulfport teammates travel to Petal Friday night. Hattiesburg defeated Petal 18 to 13 last week.
