PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - In a tight game, Pascagoula head coach Lewis Sims watched his Panthers shutdown the Moss Point offense. The Tigers could generate only 3 first downs and only 68 yards of offense.
Sims said, "Coach Coleman, coach Bishop, coach Tomes and coach Smith, they all did a good job of getting our young men lined up properly. They played their positions and they ran and helped their brothers. Great pursuit yields great defense."
Cornerback Jordan Mims said, "We run to the ball. We practice that a lot. We were real prepared. Our coaches got us ready for this game.
5-11, 191 pound junior running back Reginald Hunter knew his No. 10 would be called on to carry the Panthers ground attack after fellow junior running back Javarous Walker suffered a season ending knee injury last week in practice.
Hunter bulled his way for 191 yards and cracked the end zone once. He also caught a number of passes coming out of the backfield.
"I was feeling great the whole game, "stated Hunter. "I felt like me and my team was concentrating on what we had to do as an offense."
6-1, 175 pound junior quarterback Granlund Torjusen connected on 13 of 20 pass attempts for 139 yards. He says backup quarterbacks Hunter Collins and Jakwaize Walker pushed him during the preseason.
Torjusen said, "You always have to be pushed. You're not just going to come out here and work as hard as you would if you don't have somebody competing with you."
In close football games, Pascagoula can rely on senior kicking specialist Griffin Sublett. He drilled two field goals from 49 and 40 yards and his big foot will be counted on all season-long.
"I feel like I'm pretty accurate and my range is probably 55 to 58 yards, "said Sublett.
The 5A Panthers travel to Ocean Springs Friday night at 7:00 at Greyhounds Stadium. The 6A Ocean Springs Greyhounds dropped a tough 27-24 decision to Brandon on Friday on a field goal as time expired.
The Pascagoula-Ocean Springs clash will be one of the featured games on the Friday Night Football Showdown with Tyler Bouldin and A.J. Giardina.
