MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

While most students were sleeping soundly, fire ripped through portions of Moss Point High School overnight, canceling school on Monday.

Authorities say the incident happened at the east side main entrance of the school near Weems Street. while crews worked throughout the night checking for hot spots, and officials say a large amount of smoke was inside.

Surveillance footage from the school shows multiple individuals inside the building shortly before midnight.

The Jackson County Fire Marshal, the State Fire Marshal and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations are all part of a joint investigation looking for clues to determine how the fire ignited.

Officials on the scene told WLOX News that arson may be the cause.

NAACP President Curley Clark is offering a $500 cash reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the 'apprehension and conviction' of the individual or individuals responsible for the fire.

Parents may call the school board at 228-474-3399 with any questions.
