'Unhealthy' air quality improves in smoky Portland metro area

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The air quality in the Portland metro area remained "unhealthy" Sunday, but was improving from Saturday.

On Saturday, people throughout Portland and the surrounding cities woke up to smoke-filled skies. High winds pushed smoke from wildfires east of the Cascades into the Willamette Valley.

The air quality, according to the Department of Environmental Quality, jumped from moderate to very unhealthy in a matter of hours Saturday.

On Sunday evening, DEQ listed the air quality in the area, based on 24-hour averages, as unhealthy. However, by 6 p.m., based on a one-hour average, the air quality was considered moderate.

The air quality index Sunday night was about half of what it had been 24 hours earlier.

The National Weather Service reported Sunday night that west winds would slowly improve the smoky skies throughout the evening and into Monday.
