ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are conducting an investigation into a Wednesday shooting involving a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy.
Around 1:30 p.m., The Jackson County Sheriff's Department received call about a man armed with a gun inside of a house in the 9800 block of Scott Street in Latimer. According to statement issued by the sheriff's department, dispatchers could 'hear what appeared to be arguing and fighting over the phone line after the irate male dropped the telephone.'
When JCSD arrived at the scene, deputies encountered 51-year-old Robert "Biker Bob" Baker Ezell still inside of the home. When Baker refused to obey commands to put down the weapon, deputies fired multiple shots.
Baker, who was struck multiple times, was transported to Oceans Springs Hospital and taken into surgery.
"They were met with a man, armed subject. We exchanged gunfire, but the man did not fire his weapon, to my understanding at this time," said Sheriff Mike Ezell. "We're still investigating."
Several neighbors said the scene was not unfamiliar. While, they were shocked that someone had been shot, they feel the area is becoming more dangerous.
"I didn't have to worry about none of this when I was little. I can actually walk the streets and go to the friend's house and not worry about it, but now it's you got to watch your kids when you put them outside," said Savannah Ewing, a neighbor who lives in the area.
