JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation has awarded $3.8 million in grants to seven ports across the state for maintenance and improvement projects.

The funds were approved by the Mississippi Transportation Commission. Two Coast ports were among the seven chosen for repairs and upgrades.

The Port of Pascagoula received the largest grant of $950,000 for dock repairs.

Port Bienville in Bay St. Louis was awarded $511,335 to construct two heavy lift areas on the main dock.

The other five ports were Lowndes County Port in Columbus, Natchez-Adams County Port, Port of Rosedale, Port of Greenville and Yellow Creek State Inland Port in Luka.

Transportation commissioners said these grants will help make needed improvements that will continue to support local economic growth.

Mississippi's ports and waterways play an important role in transporting goods and services across the country.
