Mississippi Braves used the long ball to pop the Biloxi Shuckers 10-3 Tuesday night

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The Biloxi Shuckers got on the scoreboard first with one run in the bottom of the first.  Center fielder Brett Phillips led off the inning with a walk  He stole second and ended up at third base when the catcher's throw glanced the Braves second baseman's glove and ended up into center field.

Nathan Orf smacked a single into right field that enabled Phillips to score from third base.

Shuckers starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson ran into trouble in the top of the third inning.  With the bases loaded and one out, Rio Ruiz belted a sacrifice fly ball into left field, center fielder Brett Phillips jumped in front of Victor Roache and made the catch for the second out, but the Braves plated the tying run.

Braeden Schlehuber stepped up to the plate and ripped a double into the gap into left field, the Braves added two runs on the big hit and led 3-1.

Mississippi would come up with two more big innings.  In the top of the seventh the Braves scored four runs beginning with a two run homer by Emerson Landoni off Shuckers reliever Martin Viramontes.  That was Landoni's first home run on the season.  Kevin Ahrens smacked his 8th home run, a solo-shot off Viramontes.

The Braves power surge continued in the top of the 8th.  Center fielder Matt Lipka belted his second home run on the season, a two run blast off Drew Gagnon.

Hobbs Johnson (7-6, 3.38 ERA) suffered the loss. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits, tossed 4 strike outs and 5 base on balls.

Viramontes had a tough outing.  In one inning, the Braves scored 4 runs on 4 hits and Viramontes gave up two home runs.

Drew Gagnon also had his troubles on the mound.  Mississippi scored 3 runs on 3 hits, tossed 4 strike outs.

Shuckers second baseman Nathan Orf was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. He carries a .272 batting average. Shuckers left fielder Victor Roache had 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate and is now batting .262.

21-year-old pitcher Lucas Sims pitched his best game since becoming a member of the Mississippi Braves.  He gave up 1 run on 4 hits, 6 strike outs and 3 base on balls.  He's now 1 and 2 on the season.

The Shuckers dropped to 64-48 on the season while the Braves are now 59-54.

Biloxi entertains Pensacola beginning 6:40 p.m. Wednesday at MGM Park, game one of a five-game series.
