Lightning causes wildfire on Mt. Adams, estimated at 1,200 acres

MT. ADAMS, WA (KPTV) -

A fire broke out on the east side of Mt. Adams on Monday night after a lightning storm came through the area, according to the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

DNR said a lightning strike is likely the cause of the fire starting.

The fire, called Cougar Creek Fire, began on Yakama Nation/Bureau of Indian Affairs land and has since spread onto state/DNR land. It is currently estimated to be about 1,200 acres in size.

The Cougar Creek Fire is burning in heavy timber and is being fought by both land and air resources from Washington DNR, BIA and the Forest Service.

DNR said there are currently no evacuations for this fire, although some sparsely located summer cabins may be threatened.
