Pascagoula friends launch effort to stop the hunger

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Nineteen churches and 12 businesses in Pascagoula are packing up 100,000 meals as part of the Stop the Hunger Now project.

Clint Ware, one of the organizers, says the second-year project is a community-wide effort involving about 200 volunteers. The 250-calorie meals are made of rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables, "Not a typical American meal, but when you are starving, it's necessary," Ware says.

The products come in big containers, and volunteers pack the contents into individual bags, making six meals.

The meals will be distributed all over the world.

Stop Hunger Now has packed so far almost 209 million meals and served 71 countries.

Mike Lacy is covering this event and will have more tonight on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
