WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) -

The temperature reading on the Bank of Wiggins sign looks scary. But although this may have been a false temperature reading, it certainly felt like 109 degrees. Residents were feeling the heat this weekend, especially in the inland counties of South Mississippi that don't get the benefit from the Gulf breeze

That is, unless you were getting wet here at Splash of Fun Water Park at Flint Creek.

The sweltering heat has proven a good marketing tool for the park in its first year. “I believe it has, with it being so hot people just want to come in and cool off,” said Gwen Ryals, co-owner of Splash of Fun Water Park. “With the pools that we have, it’s lake water so it’s always cool and so they love that.”

But being prepared is part of the plan. Lifeguards are trained to treat, preferably to prevent, heat-related issues.

Lifeguard Case Sloan’s tips are basic. “Make sure that you take a break every hour or so in the shade,” he said. “Get out of the sun. And just always make sure you drink plenty of water. It's magical. Water is amazing.”

Apparently, most people are taking the advice. Jonathan Shultz is an emergency room nurse at George Regional Hospital in Lucedale. He spent part of his weekend at Flint Creek, hoping to escape summer's sweltering heat. “Even though we’ve had high temperatures this summer, we’ve definitely had some worse summers in the past. A lot of folks get used to the heat. In the three to four shifts that I work in a week, there’s probably a dozen that will come in that’s people just obviously got way to hot.”

The park has been a big hit with adults and kids trying to stay cool.

“Air conditioning’s good but you've got to get outside and enjoy God's creation,” said Jason Conner. “So, yes, it is hot, but we’re keeping hydrated and the kids are enjoying the water.”

Daughter Emma Grace Conner enjoyed the day, plain and simple. “I just like being wet, for some reason.”

It was the same for friend, Layla Juneau. “I always enjoy a beautiful day outside and I always play on the swings but what I love most outside is that I get to go swimming and I get to go to the water park.”
