PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Seeds of volunteerism that were planted after Hurricane Katrina are continuing to bear fruit. Habitat For Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast is doing a special build to commemorate 10 years since the storm that left thousands of Coast residents homeless.

Right now, Habitat For Humanity is busy building three new houses in Pascagoula while also reflecting on the accomplishments over the last decade. Officials said it's the continuing support of volunteers who have made it all possible to enjoy life beyond Katrina.

When Chevron put out a call for volunteers to help construct a new Habitat For Humanity house, the response from employees was so overwhelming the company had to create a waiting list.

"You know that you're giving back to a family and giving back to your community and making a great place for them to be able to have great memories," volunteer Amy Brandenstein said.

Habitat For Humanity is building in a subdivision Pascagoula. With every nail, Chevron volunteers say they're building a family's hopes and dreams.

"A good quality of life and good quality housing is so important for our company. Not just for the people who work at the refinery, but also for the community as a whole," said Chevron Spokesperson Alan Sudduth. "We recognize that we have a license to operate here. One of the best ways we can continue that license is to be a part of the community and look for ways to help improve our community, and providing new housing is a wonderful way to do that."

Since Hurricane Katrina, Habitat for Humanity has built 325 homes and rehabbed 550 more, all because of 25,000 volunteers from around the world who were willing to give of their time.

"That's what is so amazing when people reach out to us and say, 'Hey, we want to come out and do something,'" said Adele Lyons of Habitat For Humanity for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. "It's been 10 years, and 10 years is a long time. And they really still care and they care about the community. They've seen the progress made and they want that to continue."

The new subdivision is located off of Lanier Avenue in Pascagoula and will eventually include 13 new homes.
