GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled a jury was correct when it sentenced Christopher Baxter to life in prison without the possibility for parole for the 2010 murder of George County Sheriff Garry Welford.

Baxter appealed to the state Supreme Court after the state court of appeals upheld his conviction last year. The Supreme Court ruled 6-2 Thursday that there was no reversible error in his trial.

According to court documents, Welford was killed on July 21, 2010, after he was hit by a truck occupied by Baxter and his girlfriend, Brandy Williams, during a high-speed chase.

Baxter and Williams were charged with capital murder and were tried separately. Both were convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Williams appealed her conviction and won a new trial last December. We do not know when that new trial will be held.
