Hurricane Hunters head to HI to track Guillermo

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Hurricane Hunters from the U.S. Air Force Reserve deployed from Keesler Air Force Base on Friday to track a storm making its way toward the Hawaiian Islands.

The National Hurricane Center forecast said Hurricane Guillermo has progressed into a Category 2 storm with winds up to 105 mph.

Aircrews are on their way to a joint base in Pearl Harbor-Hickam and are expected to fly their first mission on Sunday.

During their flights, aircrews collect data such as temperature, wind speed, wind direction, humidity and surface pressure.

They fly through the eye of the storm four to six times and use a dropsonde, an expendable weather device, to gather weather data as it descends to the ocean's surface.

The NHC predicts Guillermo will hit Hawaii by the middle of next week.
