Police: Fatal wreck happened during vehicle pursuit

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - We are learning more details about a St. Martin wreck that killed one person Thursday evening. Officials with the D'Iberville Police Department now tell us the fatal wreck happened during a vehicle pursuit.

Deputy Chief Clay Jones said officers responded to a fight at a restaurant on Central Avenue around 5 p.m. Witnesses told officers they saw a man ram another vehicle in an attempt to leave the scene.

Jones said witnesses pointed out the vehicle to police when it returned, and that's when the chase began. Officials identified the driver as Marshall Smith, of D'Iberville.

Jones said Smith was driving eastbound on Quave Road when he nearly hit two police vehicles with blue lights flashing. Smith lost control of the vehicle near the intersection of St. Martin Road, left the roadway and hit a tree.

Jackson County Deputy Coroner Jason Moody pronounced the unidentified passenger of the vehicle dead at the scene. Smith was taken to Ocean Springs Hospital to be treated for injuries.

Jones said witnesses told officers Smith had stolen the car from his mother, and she had found him at the restaurant where the fight happened. Smith also had outstanding warrants for his arrest in D'Iberville, Ocean Springs and Gulfport.

The accident is being investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
