The Biloxi Shuckers watched their winning streak come to an end at three, while the Jackson Generals ended their losing streak at four by pulling away to a 7-5 victory Tuesday night, game one of a five-game series.
Jabari Henry who was batting only .158 before Tuesday's Shuckers game, smashed a two-run homer off Biloxi starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg in the top of the second.
Victory Roache, the Southern League Player of the Week, hit a double in the bottom of the second. He actually singled off the glove of the Generals third baseman. The ball would roll into center field and Roache took off for second base and was safe. Roache extended his on base streak to 13 games. Over the last six games he's 11 for 23 with seven doubles.
Tyrone Taylor ripped a double to the wall in left center field that plated Roache to trim the Generals lead 2-1.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Shuckers designated hitter Nick Ramirez dropped a single into shallow center fielder.
With two outs in the inning, Taylor Green came through with his fifth home run, a two-run blast to right field that gave Biloxi a 3-2 advantage.
That lead wouldn't hold up. Hellweg ran into control problems and he was pulled after 4.1 innings after Jackson scored 5 runs in the top of the fifth. Hellweg (0-4, 9.60 ERA) gave up 7 runs on 6 hits, 5 base on balls and two strikeouts and he suffered his fourth loss of the season.
Roache went 2 for 4 with two doubles. Ramirez had one hit in three trips to the plate and scored two runs. Tyrone Taylor went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
Dylan Unsworth (1-4, 6.21) posted the win, his first of the season. In 5.1 innings, he gave up three runs on 8 hits and seven strikeouts.
The Shuckers drop to 14-16 in the second half standings and will try to get back under the win column 7:10 Wednesday night at MGM Park against the Generals.
Biloxi manager Carlos Subero will send right handed pitcher Brooks Hall (7-6, 4.66 ERA) on the mound.
