GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - How would you like to go through airport security and customs lines in the blink of an eye? If you're a trusted traveler enrolled in the Global Entry program, you can. That's why several frequent flyers signed up Tuesday morning at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
In a small office, busy travelers are interviewed, and fingerprinted after paying a $100 dollar fee. If they are accepted into the program, the sky's the limit.
Jason Morehouse was one of those signing up Tuesday.
"Hopefully, it will expedite my trip in and out of the country so I'll less wait at the security lines. Also, by doing the global entry, I just learned that I get registered to the TSA pre-check so when I'm flying domestically, it will speed up my travels," Morehouse said.
That TSA pre-check privilege was a popular perk for many who signed up, including Will Israel.
"I've been TSA pre-check for a number of years through Delta Airlines and that's changed over the years. So I figured I would apply for the Global Entry because it's only $15 more, so if I take one trip, $3 a year, I figured for the convenience it's absolutely worth it," Israel explained.
Even those who don't travel abroad very much see the benefits of being a trusted traveler under Global Entry.
"I don't necessarily travel out of the country but maybe once a year, but within the country several times a year," Woody Beacham said. "So to me, the TSA pre-check in itself was worth it, plus the ease of going back through customs was just an added benefit."
Even though the Global Entry program has been available for several years, mostly in major markets across the country, having it come to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport really kind of puts us on the map. Jim Foster with the airport confirmed that.
"I think folks around here probably weren't really aware of Global Entry and that's one of the things that this mobile site is going to do for us. It will kind of raise the raise the level of awareness that we have Global Entry available, and based on the success of this, we hope to have it back permanently."
The Global Entry office will be open once again Wednesday for the last day during regular business hours. You should apply online first though, and schedule an appointment to be interviewed.
