GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The public is invited to attend an informational meeting this week pertaining to the Turkey Creek area in Gulfport. The area has been highly discussed in the past, due to watershed issues and flooding. This week's meeting is being called to bring attention to a new proposal in the city, to fill some of the wetlands near the creek.
Community organizer, Howard Page, is hosting the meeting to make sure the public is fully informed of the consequences a wetland fill would bring.
"The most immediate danger that this project presents is the increase in flood risk and it also hurts everyone's flood insurance rates as we look at the community ratings system. There are advantages given to towns that protect the natural resources and their floodplain this is destroying the natural resources in the floodplain," said Page.
The meeting is this Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Isiah Fredricks Community Center in Gulfport.
