OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - A South Mississippi veterinarian is now in the running for the title of America's Best Vet. It's an online contest held in conjunction with the Veterinary Care Charitable Fund.
Dr. Stacey Randall has worked at Bienville Animal Medical Clinic in Ocean Springs for the past 17 years. She was one of 500 veterinarians nominated for the award across the country. That list has now been whittled down to 20 finalists.
Dr. Randall specializes in small animal care.
"Chase got into a scuffle with a bigger dog. The dog grabbed him around the neck. As you can see, he's got some damage here and it ended up tearing his esophagus," Dr. Randal explained as she tended to her patient.
There is something new every day, including a turtle that has a run-in with a car.
"So this little guy has a broken shell and this is fixable. What we can do is come in and put a little fiberglass patch on here," Randall said.
One of the unique things about Dr. Randall is she not only connects with her non-human patients, the cats and the dogs and the other animals she cares for, she also connects with her human counterparts.
"You really get close to clients and get to know them," Randall said. "I love it; I love meeting people and talking to them."
And those clients notice that attention to detail. One of them is Melissa Faircloth.
"She's always made me feel comfortable. She always takes the best care of my pets. She understands they are part of the family. So it's good to have a vet that appreciates that part of your life," Faircloth praised.
True to her nature, the doctor passes around the credit.
"These are our technicians that you see back here that really are the nuts and bolts of the clinic."
This honor holds a special meaning for the clinic's co-owner, Dr. Chris Duke.
"What I think is great is for our community and Mississippi to have someone nationally recognized like she is. That means a lot. Whenever somebody in Mississippi scores something special, I think we're all behind it."
