For decades, our troops have been considered to be in a safe zone within the United States. Being in a safe area means no threat and no need to carry weapons. We now know that our unarmed troops are not in a safe zone. The murders last week of five service members at two military sites in Chattanooga proved once again terrorism can strike anywhere, anytime.
We agree with the move in Mississippi and in other states. The Mississippi National Guard now has the authority to arm its personnel at state military facilities, we hope all other branches of the military will do the same. They will no longer be soft targets.
We believe the cowardly attacks on our unarmed military will likely have a different outcome when our professional troops can shoot back.
